Agile Project Management beyond the Mechanics and Moves

A one-day workshop presented by Gil Broza, Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011 at the Toronto Board of Trade.

Abstract

Does any of the following sound familiar?

  • You are part of a group implementing Scrum or other Agile methods, but the team isn’t quite buying in (or is outright resisting it)
  • You've had Agile training (e.g. Certified ScrumMaster), and somehow it doesn’t quite map to your company’s messy reality
  • You like Agile, it makes sense, you understand that “it’s about people” – but you don’t know how to translate that into practice
  • Now that you’re an “Agile manager”, you're not sure how you add value

If these statements resonate with you, this experiential, PowerPoint-free workshop is for you. Practise the various ways in which you add value as an Agile manager. Experience first-hand how deeply the human factor affects a team’s performance. Gain tools for helping your team find their voice and overcome their challenges. Become confident in your role as servant leader who helps the team grow, become self-organizing, and commit to their objectives.

This workshop is largely based on Gil's upcoming book, "The Human Side of Agile Management"

Intended Audience

ScrumMasters, project managers, functional managers, team leads, Agile coaches. Suitable for advanced practitioners too.

Pre-requisites:

Participants must have basic knowledge of Agile methods (e.g. Scrum), preferably from some first-hand experience.

Learning objectives

  • Gain tools and insights for adding value as an Agile manager
  • Develop techniques to help your team self-organize for great results -- and preventing disaster
  • Identify what you can do to improve team performance and customer satisfaction

Workshop structure

A few days before the workshop, you’ll be asked to email Gil (the instructor) a brief pre-work questionnaire so he can customize the workshop to your needs.

The workshop will start with a group-based, interactive segment on Agile teams, their managers, and the managers’ responsibilities. During the next 4-5 hours, you’ll participate in a fun, fast-paced simulation of an Agile working environment. (About half the time you will build stuff, and the rest will be a practical debrief / retrospective.) We’ll finish with an interactive segment or two on the topic(s) that appeared most pertinent or challenging.

Attendance is limited to 25 participants, and less than half the seats remain available. Be sure to register early to guarantee your spot.
